If you are not sure what expertise you have to offer the world through a blog or web site  just check Blogger or WorldPress, I am sure you will find a blog that motivates you to think "hey, I can do better than that".  While you are looking for ideas pay attention to the advertising on the blogs or websites. What kind of advertising do they have on their blog? Is it Google Adsense, Amazon or something else? Where is the advertising located, are they banner ads, where are they placed on the blog? 

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so if you see something that works well "borrow" it for your site.  Mind you, I am not saying that you should cut and paste from their website to yours, but if you see something (other than content) borrow it and put your spin on it.

You can check out my blogs, they were created for different reasons. I started my linux blog, I wanted a way to track which versions worked and the problems that I experienced. I created a travel blog to help me keep track of my business travel, which hotels had good banquet facilities, good food, etc... I soon found that it worked well for vacation travel, I can keep track of good hotels, places to eat, dive shops, ect... I also created blogs for computer equipment that I have bought, the thought was to help someone looking to purchase the same equipment. I have let several Blogs die and I should delete them from Blogger.
